Life Outside the Hustle with Brent Tieri

Sep 16, 2019

Maggie Berghoff is a certified nurse practitioner from Vanderbilt University as well as trained in Functional Medicine from the Institute for Functional Medicine.

At 22 years old, Maggie found herself carrying a sudden 50lbs of extra weight, felt bloated, was breaking out in the most horrible skin hives, had hair that was thinning out and was experiencing brain fog that was unbearable. She was also plagued by relentless feelings of fatigue that made it hard to get through the day despite a solid 10 hours of sleep.

A few months later, Maggie found herself lying in a hospital bed after experiencing a mini-stroke. She was discharged with a list of diagnoses, medications, and a doom sentence of a rare disease, kidney failure, infertility, and IV therapy for the rest of her life.

Fortunately, Maggie didn’t accept that she couldn’t be back to her normal self again. She turned to what’s known as Functional Medicine, a cutting-edge whole-systems medicine approach that addresses and treats the underlying root causes of chronic illness and symptoms, instead of just managing symptoms like the traditional medical model.

In less than 6 months she was back to her normal self again, all lab values pristine, and feeling more healthy and happy than ever had before.

Flash forward, Maggie now takes her extensive training in both the traditional and natural medical worlds and provides her clients with her easy to follow framework.

Her clients report increased energy and vitality, weight loss, hormone balance, glowing and anti-aging skin, auto-immune disease reversal, and elimination of chronic pains and gastro-intestinal distress. They are able to optimize their health, home, and performance and ultimately show up as their best selves in their life, business, and relationships.

In this episode we dive into:

  1. How a “mini stroke” was a wake up call that sparked a shift in the way that Maggie approached her health.
  2. Why her initial journey into functional medicine was actually more about helping herself rather than helping others, but also how it became a springboard to serve and impact others.
  3. The biggest differences between the western medical model and functional medicine and why finding the root cause of a disease is more important than only addressing the symptom.
  4. Some of the stressors that surround us each day and how some of them may actually surprise you.
  5. Why Maggie believes the body has the ability to heal from any disease.
  6. How she balances her intense times of work and focus with periods of energy, rest and renewal and the structure and boundaries Maggie has in her life to keep work from taking over.
  7. Why healthcare is not limited to only the treatment of disease, but also in priming and preparing the body for peak performance.
  8. Maggie’s unique approach to healthcare and how it differs from other functional medicine practitioners.
  9. Her ultimate vision of changing the health of the world and impacting the health and lives of millions.
  10. Why her ultimate version of living outside the hustle is all about family.
